Martifer Solar to construct 57 MW in Jordan
Martifer Solar, a subsidiary of Martifer SGPS, will begin construction of a 57 MWp portfolio of solar PV projects in Jordan. The portfolio consists of four projects, which were awarded successfully with Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) under Round 1 of Jordan’s National Renewable Energy Plan.
Of the 57 MWp portfolio, there are three projects each with an individual capacity of 11 MWp, located near the city of Ma’an in south-central Jordan—Al Ward Al Joury, Al Zahrat Al Salam and Al Zanbaq. In addition, there is one project, Jordan Solar One, with a capacity of 24 MWp, to be constructed near the northern town of Mafraq. Martifer Solar will provide the EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) services for the portfolio and perform the subsequent O&M (operation and maintenance) for all four solar PV projects.
“We are proud to be a key member involved in this groundbreaking 57 MWp portfolio. Jordan currently imports 95% of its power needs, which costs approximately a fifth of the country’s GDP, and the development and construction of renewable energy projects such as these will be essential for its future,” said Henrique Rodrigues, CEO of Martifer Solar. “Furthermore, this achievement is a testimonial to the continued expansion of Martifer Solar’s track record in Development, EPC and O&M for solar projects throughout emerging markets.”
All four projects are part of the IFC’s innovative “Seven Sisters” financing package, which provided a total of $207 million in debt financing for seven projects awarded under Jordan’s Round 1. The IFC acted as the lead arranger for the financing, together with a syndicate of other financers including Bahrain’s Arab Bank, the European Arab Bank, FMO, FinnFund and OPEC’s Fund for International Development.* The projects reached financial close at the end of May and are set to begin construction.
Eduardo Pereira, Director of Business Development in the Middle East for Martifer Solar, said, “We are delighted to see our construction team in place in Jordan as it is another milestone achievement following a long period of development. Currently, Martifer Solar is considering and performing due diligence for other new EPC and O&M opportunities in this exciting market and the greater Middle East region.”
As recently announced**, the World Bank Group has extended its support for these four projects by providing investment guarantees, backed through the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA). The executive vice president and CEO of MIGA, Keiko Honda, was quoted publicly as saying that the agency expects high development impact from these projects due to the fact that they will provide Jordanians with cleaner and more reliable energy, aligned with the government’s energy plan.

Martifer Solar Connects Pv Plant in Belgium for Orka NV
Martifer Solar, a subsidiary of Martifer SGPS, has completed the construction and connection of a 738.45 kWp PV system on the rooftop of the Decathlon building in Evere, Belgium for the company Orka NV.
Martifer Solar was responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for the rooftop PV plant, integrated into the new facilities of Decathlon in the Brussels region. The building itself was developed and built by CBRE Global Investors, and leased to Decathlon on a long-term basis.
The building hosts the largest Decathlon store in Europe and currently stands as one of their largest stores in the world. With an area of 10,600 m2, the 738.45kWp PV plant installed on the building’s rooftop, was built using 2,735 monocrystalline solar panels installed on fixed structures. The rooftop PV plant will produce an estimated 632.3 MWh/year, which will offset the emission of more than 140 tons of carbon dioxide annually and will provide sufficient energy to power the average consumption of 210 households.
This new PV plant represents a continued cooperation between Martifer Solar and Orka and demonstrates their reliable and strong partnership since 2011.
“This PV plant installed by Martifer Solar in the Benelux region represents the reliability, safety and bankability of the projects and work that we have been doing in this region. The achievement of more than 150 projects built on over 300 rooftops in Belgium, together with our global expertise allows us to consolidate and expand our strategy for the EPC and O&M business in the Benelux region,” says Luis Pinho, Operations Manager in Belgium for Martifer Solar.
“This project was more complex and had a longer development lead time due to the close integration with the construction of the building itself. We have enjoyed working with Martifer Solar to realize this project to the satisfaction of all stakeholders. With this realization Orka’s capacity in rooftop PV in the Brussels region totals 7Mwp, divided over 6 rooftops,” says Jan Heyse, Managing Director of Orka, investor and asset manager for the project.
With this realization, Martifer Solar has achieved a track record of approximately 35 MW of total PV capacity installed in Belgium.

Martifer Solar connects self-consumption solar PV rooftop plant in El Salvador
Martifer Solar, a subsidiary of Martifer SGPS, has completed a new self-consumption solar PV plant located on a commercial rooftop in the Santa Tecla, El Salvador. The plant, with a total installed capacity of 300 kW, was developed by Martifer Solar’s local partner, DESENI, and was built for one of El Salvador’s largest distribution companies of consumer products, DISZASA.
Martifer Solar was responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for the PV rooftop plant. The 300 kW plant, with approximately 1,000 solar panels, will produce clean energy and will lead to the reduction of the commercial facility’s energy bill by up to 18% on an annual basis. With an area of 2000 m2, the PV plant will produce an estimated 486 MWh/year. With this production capacity, the plant will offset 350 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually and will provide sufficient energy to power more than 1500 inhabitants per year.
“The Salvadoran photovoltaic market is evolving and solar energy will be highly important in the energy mix of the country.
